    Elisabeth Lohninger and Band
    Live 2023
    Label/AN:
    Lehmann Audio, LA004
    Format:
    LP 180g

The story of this album is “a little longer”. They do exist, those happy cases where the whole is more than the sum of its parts, even in music. Elisabeth Lohninger was supposed to give a concert at the Analogtage in 2022, accompanied by Axel Fischbacher and his trio. The big C put a spanner in the works for the 2022 project. But Norbert Lehmann didn't want to miss the chance to experience Elisabeth live and on record.

So he contacted her again for the Analog Days 2023 and luckily Elisabeth Lohninger had time. She also had ideas for the members of the band and the line-up was soon finalised: Christine Corvisier, a French tenor saxophonist who lives in Cologne and has been touring successfully with her own group for some time. She has a wide stylistic range and plays with breathtaking energy. Jean Yves Jung, a keyboard wizard from France on piano. Cliff Schmitt, an experienced double bass player who has accompanied the likes of Norah Jones, Art Garfunkel, Till Brönner and Curtis Stigers in thousands of concerts. Alex Bernath, groove drummer par excellence, has played with Elisabeth Lohninger several times and is also the backbone of Ray Greene, lead singer of Santana. He has just been asked by Tower of Power.

The only word to describe what the five of them conjured up that evening in October 2023 at Bauer Studios is “magical”.

AXEL FISCHBACHER TRIO FEAT. SOPHIA OSTER
    180g Vinyl, LP – LA003

It's 2022, it's Analogtage – and once again, the music is made in front of the microphones, by musicians who – as in the case of this live recording – not only face the audience, but also dispense with nets and false floors for the recording; authenticity takes precedence over perfection. The concept of Analogtage does not allow for any subsequent manipulation of the recording, which is made directly on stereo tape. This concert shows what a musical stroke of luck this can be.

Axel Fischbacher about his trio: “You start counting, it just sounds good and it works. What more do you want? The way we completely dissolve the strict form of trio, soloist and accompanist and then use it again, the way we improvise between “abstract/free” and “strict/stylistic” and generally play with the elements of the compositions, was just there. We didn't discuss it. We didn't have to. And that's a good thing. Nico Brandenburg on double bass and Tim Dudek on drums are congenial, equal partners. Sophia Oster – who stepped in as a substitute two days before the recording – brings her sensitive singing and her extremely subtle and virtuoso piano playing to this concert. Everything fits. We are witnessing a rising star of jazz!
